Grand Rapids Engagement Photo Session with Kayla & Andrew

Kayla and Andrew’s engagement session in downtown Grand Rapids felt thoughtful, elevated, and deeply personal in a quiet, meaningful way. Grand Rapids is their home, where they built their life together, and now the place they got married - making it a natural and fitting backdrop for this season.

Their session was designed to reflect both their style and their story: polished and architectural, with layers of intention woven throughout.

Elevated, Editorial Moments in Downtown Grand Rapids

We began their session in the heart of downtown, leaning into the architecture and clean lines that give the city its timeless, editorial feel. Locations around the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Amway, and the surrounding streets offered the perfect mix of modern structure and classic city charm.

For this portion of the session, Kayla and Andrew chose a more elevated look. Andrew wore a tailored suit with a tie, while Kayla wore a sleek white dress paired with a neck scarf — a beautiful, fashion-forward detail that’s been a popular bridal trend lately. The overall look felt refined, intentional, and effortlessly chic, perfectly complementing the downtown setting.

This part of the session felt polished and stylish, while still leaving room for natural interaction and connection — the balance I love most in engagement photos.

St. Andrew’s Cathedral: A Meaningful Second Location

For the second half of their engagement session, we moved to a place that holds even deeper significance: St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Kayla and Andrew will be married.

I have always loved photographing Catholic churches — the architecture, symmetry, and sense of history they carry is unmatched. St. Andrew’s Cathedral is especially stunning, offering a timeless and reverent backdrop that feels both grand and intimate.

What made this portion of the session truly special was Kayla’s outfit choice. She wore a short dress that had been custom made from her mother’s wedding gown — a meaningful heirloom reimagined for her own wedding season. She also wore this dress to her bridal shower, making it a piece woven throughout multiple celebrations leading up to the wedding day.

Seeing such a thoughtful detail incorporated into their engagement photos added another layer of depth and legacy to their gallery.

A Session Rooted in Style, Story, and Intention

Kayla and Andrew’s downtown Grand Rapids engagement session is a perfect example of how meaningful locations don’t have to be loud to be powerful. Between the architectural elegance of downtown and the sacred beauty of their ceremony location, their gallery feels cohesive, intentional, and timeless.

These are the kinds of sessions that grow more meaningful with time — photographs that not only reflect style, but also honor family, faith, and the places that quietly shape a life together.
